Press Release on Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between Bhutan and Thailand

The fourth and final round of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between Bhutan and Thailand was held in Bangkok from 17–19 February 2025. The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Sonam Tshering Dorji, Director of the Department of Trade, Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment of Bhutan and Ms. Chotima Iemsawasdikul, Director General of the Department of Trade Negotiations, Ministry of Commerce of Thailand.

The final negotiating round marked a significant milestone, with both delegations finalizing all chapters of the agreement. The agreement once ratified is expected to provide duty free market access for Bhutanese exports to Thailand’s largely untapped market of 70 million people, strengthen economic cooperation and institutional linkages in various areas, enhance trade and investment opportunities and provide more choices in terms of access to goods to the general public at competitive prices. The successful conclusion of the negotiations has paved the way for a more seamless and mutually beneficial trade framework between the two nations, reflecting the shared vision of Bhutan and Thailand to deepen economic ties, enhance bilateral trade and provide new opportunities for businesses and consumers alike.

With the FTA negotiations concluded, both sides will now work towards the official signing of the agreement at the earliest.
