The Department of Labour, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Bhutan office, has commenced a five-day training program for the Safety Supervisor Certificate level in Samdrup Jongkhar graced by the presence of Dasho Dzongda from 25th November 2024. Participants from various sectors are taking part in the program. Additional training sessions are planned for Thimphu and Phuentsholing, and this initiative also serves as a pilot for certification at the Safety Officer and supervisory levels.
The goal of this initiative is to institutionalize professional development in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). Course profiles for Safety Officers and Safety Supervisors have been developed in alignment with the Bhutan Qualification and Professional Certification Authority (BQPCA) standards and are currently in the process of testing. A Training of Trainers (ToT) program will be held soon, ensuring that any institutions looking to conduct these trainings will have trainers who have completed the ToT in accordance with the BQF 2023 standards
This initiative aims to create a systematic framework for professional development in OHS by enhancing the skills of safety professionals and improving workplace safety standards across Bhutan. Ultimately, it seeks to foster a culture of safety and well-being for all workers. Individuals aspiring to pursue a career as safety professionals in the private and corporate sectors will need to complete this training to obtain certification (unless they hold a bachelor’s degree in the field) and are registered with the Department of Labour in accordance to the Regulations on Occupational Health, Safety, and Welfare 2022 and Regulation on OHS for Construction Industry .
