The National Zorig Day is observed on 16th May 2022 coinciding with the fifteenth Day of the third month of the Bhutanese calendar to pay respect to artisans, craftsmen and technicians for their contribution towards cultural preservation and socio-economic growth.
Zorig Chusum is pioneered during the reign of Gyalse Tenzin Rabgay which is still practiced in the country. His Holiness the 70th Je khenpo, Trulku Jigme Choedra recognized Pel Dueki Khorlo (Sanskrit: Kalachakra) as the Zorig Deity. While commemorating the 21st Zorig Day this year since its inception in 2001, the day is celebrated in the Institute of Zorig Chusums (IZCs) and Training Institutes (TTIs).The day will be observed with Lhabsang and Thruesel (Cleansing rituals) of vehicles.
The day is commemorated to pay tribute to historical figures (Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, Terton Pemalingpa, Thangtong Gyalpo, and Desi Tenzin Rabgye) who were patrons of art that played significant role in continuity of the legacy and shaping our identity.
Recognizing the importance of Zorig skills in Nation Building, the Ministry of Labour and Human Resources (MoLHR) under the visionary leadership of His Majesty the King will continue to strive towards delivering quality and market relevant training programs to Bhutanese people in the areas of Agriculture, Business & Services, Computing & IT, Construction, Creative Art & Design, Electrical, Electronic & Mechanical, Manufacturing, Power & Renewable Energy and Tourism & Hospitality. The courses are aimed at producing the “Work Ready”, “World Ready” and “Future Ready” Bhutanese skilled workers.
